Sunny Latin moments in the decor – and a superchef in the kitchen

Mexico City has no shortage of boutique hotels that manifest the best of the country’s inimitable style – an electric balance of sit-down, get-comfy insouciance and cutting-edge design that’s on display at Condesa DF, Habita, and others of their ilk. Now there’s one more to add to the list: Las Alcobas (www.lasalcobas.com, from $250), which opened at the end of January.

With interiors by Canadian firm Yabu Pushelberg (behind many a sleek hotel – from the Four Seasons in Tokyo to the Hazleton in Toronto to the St Regis right in Mexico City – as well as the Carolina Herrera boutique, Bergdorf Goodman, and the Tiffany & Co flagship in New York), Las Alcobas has just 35 rooms and four deluxe suites (first picture) and penthouses, including three three-bedroom suites with wraparound terraces and indoor-outdoor fireplaces.

The Canadians have incorporated some sunny Latin moments into the décor, from locally hand-knotted rugs to original prints by contemporary Mexican photographers. Next month, on March 20, Mexico DF superchef Marta Ortiz – the woman behind the city’s ultra-popular Aguila y sol – will debut her new restaurant, Barroco, in the hotel’s lobby.

Soon afterwards, on April 20, will come a more casual cantina-style café, called Dulce Patria, for distilled, modern takes on Mexican classics: ultra-light crisp fish tacos with shredded cabbage, zucchini-blossom quesadillas, various ceviches, and, of course, a gallery of tequilas from which to choose.
