If urbane Continental surroundings are in keeping with spring’s travel wish list, Munich is hard to beat; from the grandeur of the Alte Pinakothek’s Renaissance and Baroque painting galleries to the sleek boîtes and eateries that increasingly characterise its centre.

The Sofitel Munich Bayerpost (www.sofitel.com; suites from €669) has raised the bar to this end by introducing 10 massive new “designer” suites, which manifest varying degrees of extravagance: white flokati carpets and black lacquer walls through to raw-wood panelling and transparent Lucite minibars (pictured: the Imperial Suite).
